The 31-year-old, who will play the Man of Steel in the upcoming blockbuster Superman, shared insight into how he significantly bulked up before filming started.
"Getting to bulk up for Superman, I was really looking for an excuse to throw on some weight," David said on the Sept. 28 episode of the Manly Things (Sort Of) podcast. "I thought 210 [pounds] was going to make me happy, but I got up to 238."
The Hollywood star—who married wife Julia Best Warner in March 2023—hilariously recalled the first time that really took in his increase in muscle.
"I put on one of those crewneck sweatshirts—like an XL or XXL—and I was like, 'This is amazing,'" he shared. "I didn't fit into any of my pants."
He added, "It didn't feel great, because I did it so quickly that my body just hadn't adjusted to any of the extra weight, and I was still trying to eat a lot."
Back in May, the Juilliard alum gave fans a first look at him in his Superman costume via a joint Instagram post with the director of the movie, James Gunn, who has directed other superhero movies like the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise and Suicide Squad.
The caption for the post revealed the film's July 11, 2025 release date and simply read, "Get ready."
